Located on Mount Lion in vicinity of Shanhou Folk Culture Village, the Shishan (aka Mt. Lion) Howitzer Front in the northeast Kinmen is an underground fortification measured 508m in length, 3.6m in width, and 4.6m in average height. The Kinmen Government has taken over the Shishan Howitzer Front, the only remaining site with four howitzer emplacements built in a tunnel, from the Kinmen Defense Command since late 2009. It has been officially opened to the public since September 1, 2011, and has become one of the must-visit military attractions in Kinmen. Originally, there were four US-made M115 8-inch howitzers, with each emplaced in the open end of the four branch tunnels, accommodated in the Shishan Howitzer Front. In those days, the howitzer was an amazingly powerful weapon, with a firing range of 17 km, used to counter the PLA’s shelling from the eastern coastal area of Mainland China. This weapon has made the R.O.C. Armed Forces win a glorious victory over the PLA in the 823 Artillery Bombardment occurred in 1958 and earn the title of the first gun in East Kinmen with a resounding fame. The tourists have come to pay a visit and take a photo with the big gun one after another so as to experience its legendary power and charismatic nature.

Acting as a military attraction, the Shishan Howitzer Front is known for its multipurpose tunnel. The facilities for the howitzer emplacements are well-preserved in the tunnel. Among them, the combat readiness room, storages, ammunition room, artillery bunkers are open to the public. While visiting the only remaining howitzer base built in the tunnel all over Kinmen, the tourist may personally experience the hardships the soldiers have been through in those days. Although it is said that the tunnel is warm in winter and cool in summer, you may not deny that living in such a humid environment could be more or less inconvenient for those who once garrisoned right here in the tunnel. Through the detailed introduction offered by the docents, people may feel it a difficult task for the R.O.C. military to conduct drills for combat readiness.

The most unique selling point of this site is the daily artillery drill shows centered around the 8-inch howitzer, taking place from Fridays to Wednesdays and closed on Tuesdays. Six events for the artillery drill demonstration are scheduled on a daily basis. The tourists can see artillery drill conducted by the performers in Oliver Green Uniform to demonstrate loading and firing an 8-inch howitzer shell. People on the site may feel the ear-splitting bang with lots of smoke as realistic as it gets when the firing mechanism is ignited by pulling a wire.
