The Kuang Hua VI (KH-6), a domestically developed fast attack missile boat, is equipped with four Hsiung Feng II (HF-2) anti-ship missiles with a range of 150km, making it capable of conducting saturation attack against the enemy if operational situation requires. The stealth guided missile boat is also armed with a 20mm anti-aircraft gun, a 7.62mm machine gun and decoy systems. With low-cost and high combat power, this small-sized fast attack craft is considered an effective asymmetric force to counter potential threats. All these features make the KH-6 a crucial combat platform to deter rivals in modern naval operations.

Being built domestically in 1979, the Hai Ou (Seagull) missile boat was armed with two Hsiung Feng I (HF-1) missiles as an anti-ship asset. As the HF-2 was successfully developed by the Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) in the mid-1990s, the Republic of China Navy (ROCN) proposed to replace the Hai Ou-class missile patrol boats, which were about to be decommissioned due to its service life of 20 years, so as to sustain combat power for the ROCN. Thus, the state-owned China Ship Building Corporation (CSBC) was awarded the contract to build 30 missile boats with displacement over 150 tons, featuring great stealth and striking capabilities, along with high mobility, to conduct asymmetric warfare. The prototype of the Kuang Hwa VI, FACG-60 (Fast Attack Craft, Guided missile), was delivered to the ROCN in April, 2003, after years of development to accomplish the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E). During the same year, this newly developed FACG-60 missile boat, right before coming into service on October 1, also joined the HK-19 Military Exercise held in September to conduct live-fire trial of a HF-2 anti-ship missile to enhance the ROCN’s sea denial capability.

With stealth outer layer and high mobility, the KH-6 fast attack missile boat is an agile small-sized vessel equipped with powerful subsonic anti-ship missiles, making it an enabler to conduct surprise raid against the threats over territorial waters in accordance with the ROCN’s operational planning phase. Deployed onboard the KH-6 fast attack missile boat, HF-2 missile system with dual mode seekers can automatically search and hit the enemy ships and generate tremendous destructive power while hitting the target. Receiving the instructions from target-acquiring system and command control system in accordance with operational requirements, its launching platforms can conduct direct strike on single vessel or saturation attack with multiple missiles using waypoints to fly in different paths to destroy the target ship and achieve greater deterrent effect.
