The History Exhibition Hall of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the Republic of China (R.O.C.) is divided into five main sections, namely Military Flags & Insignia of R.O.C., Organization Evolution of MND, Leaders of R.O.C. Armed Forces, Outstanding Achievements of MND, and Global Partnership for Cooperation. Many historical documents and artifacts about the MND, R.O.C., are displayed over there. Some of the important historical materials and documents are integrated with information technologies to fully demonstrate the glorious history of the MND, R.O.C., and its contributions to all defense and military affairs of the Republic of China.
Military flag is generally considered as the symbol of spirit and honor for a military unit. The exhibition section "Military Flags & Insignia of R.O.C." displays lots of flags and the introduction of their history, including the National Flag of the Republic of China, various military flags, and R.O.C. Ministry of National Defense Flag. The flags closely related to the establishment of the R.O.C. are all displayed in this exhibition section, such as Iron Blood 18-Star Flag (originally used as the banner of the Wuchang Uprising), Five-colored Flag (also known as Five Races Under One Union Flag, emphasizing harmony between what were considered the five major ethnic groups in China), the Blue Sky with a White Sun and Red Earth Flag (referred to as the National Flag of the Republic of China). Each of the flags has a significant role to play in the R.O.C. history, which has been lasting for more than a century. Besides, there are some physical objects displayed over there, such as orders, decorations and medals of the R.O.C. Armed Forces as well as the Honour Sabre of the Awakened Lion, to symbolize the special honor to the R.O.C. military personnel.
The Republic of China has been established for more than a century since 1912. Before relocating to Taiwan, the country was reorganized several times from the Provisional Government in Nanjing (1912), Beiyang Government (1912 to 1928), Constitutional Protection Junta (a military government established in 1917 by the KMT in Guangzhou in opposition to the Beiyang Government), to the unification of China, achieved by the Northern Expedition (1926 to1928) to end Beiyang government and establish the Nationalist Government in Nanjing, whose authority waxed and waned in response to Japanese invasion (1937 to 1945) and the Chinese Civil War (1927 to 1949). Over the periods of time mentioned above, military organization in any form had its specific role to serve for the ruling government. In this sense, the exhibition section "Organization Evolution of MND" displays diagrams and pictures to introduce military organization in each stage of the Republic of China and the history of the Ministry of National Defense. It is worth mentioning that hologram technology is exploited to present holographic projection so as to create three-dimensional lifelike images. For instance, the Order of National Glory with Grand Cordon is among some valuable artifacts, presented in this way, to indicate something important in the history of the Ministry of National Defense, R.O.C.
